Actress Selena Gomez has been a star of the big and small screen since the tender age of 10 but more recently she has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons and ended up in rehab. Now the young actress and singer has spoken out about her recent problems during a very moving and highly emotional speech.
It was back in January of this year when Selena Gomez checked into rehab and now the young star is back and has taken to the stage to give a speech that goes someway in explaining her reasons behind needing to “spend time on herself”.
Selena made her speech at the first annual We Day California event which was held at the Oracle Arena in Oakland and while on stage she spoke for eight minutes during her speech.
She told her fans, many of whom were in the audience: “I’m surrounded by people who are supposed to guide me and some of them have and others haven’t. They pressure me: “You gotta be sexy; you gotta be cute; you gotta be nice; you gotta be all of these things.”
She continued during her speech: “You can all relate. You all have pressure that you have to deal with every day – with school, with work, with fiends, with parents, with family. They tell me what to wear, how to look, what I should say, how I should be.
“Until recently I had given in to that pressure. I lost sight of who I was. I listened to opinions of people and I tried to change who I am because I thought others would accept me for it. And I realised I don’t know how to be anything but myself.
“All I really want to know is that you are changing the world, I’m not changing the world, you’re changing the world and that is amazing.”
21 year old Selena Gomez was obviously moved by the event which had been designed to motivate young people to act and take action on local and international issues and she started by saying: “I am not an activist. I haven’t changed the world or led a campaign.”
But while Selena may not have led a campaign her words are very important to the many young fans that she has and who listen to her every word during every speech that she makes.
She said: “I am here just to tell you my path so that you can hopefully take something away from it, because I don’t like being honest with press and interviews. I like being honest with you directly.”
The young singer and actress concluded he speech by offering support to all those who were there to follow their own dreams. She said: “I am sure all of you have been told you don’t have what it takes and that you may not be good enough…when deep down, it is all you want to do, you want to be part of something great, you want to make something great. It crushes you when people try to tell you that you are not good enough”
Selena Gomez used her platform to be able to make a speech that she felt was truly important and her words are sure to have hit home with many of her young fans.
