Nicki Minaj is known for being outspoken and her speech at the BET Awards where she won the award for Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the fifth consecutive year showed that she is still able to grab the headlines with her words.
A demure looking Nicki Minaj, dressed in a simple body hugging black dress, used her acceptance speech at the awards ceremony to speak out about writing her own lyrics and being strong in a male dominated industry while she also highlighted the pressure put on stars by the press and their lack of privacy.
Nicki Minaj began by thanking everyone for her award and spoke about how it still means a lot to her to be acknowledged even after five years of winning the award. She said: “This is always very very emotional for me because this is my fifth year winning this award and I don’t take it for granted, I really don’t.”
She added: “I thank God that I have been placed in a position to do something and represent women in a culture that is so male driven and I want you to know this – I want you to know that I have an album The Pink Print, that is coming out before the year ends.”
She then went on to speak about how it is important to her for people to know that she writes her own songs and lyrics: “My point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is that when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it.”
However, while she highlighted her own song writing skills she also used the speech to say that she did not care if people knew about her writing or not and that it was all about the fans for her.
“I really don’t even care if I get my credit or if I don’t. I don’t look at myself as a female rapper, because I know what I do. And I thank my fans because they…They might cut me off.”
She then used the speech to talk about how far black people in the industry had come: “At one time black people were getting blacked out on the TV now they own the network. This is big. This is different.”
But while Nicki Minaj used her speech to talk about important issues for women and black people in the industry she concluded by recounting a story about a near death experience that happened to her recently to highlight the pressure the media places on stars.
Nicki Minaj said: ” I just wanna say that, the other day, literally I didn’t tell anyone this, I really thought I was about to die. Like I was saying my prayers to die. And I didn’t even wanna call the ambulance because I thought well if I call the ambulance, it’s gonna be on TMZ. And I would rather sit there and die…and it made me realize, I don’t care what anybody gotta say. I’ma do me, I’ma do me. And I hope and pray that BET continues to honor authenticity. And that’s all I’m gonna say about that.”
Acceptance speeches are often used by celebrities to highlight issues close to their heart and Nicki Minaj did just that in herspeech at the BET Awards.
